What is Sclerotherapy?

Spider and varicose veins can be more than just a cosmetic problem. They can be a source of discomfort, causing pain and sensation of ‘heaviness’ on the affected sites.

Sclerotherapy for Spider and Varicose Veins

Sclerotherapy is one of the well-known treatments for spider and smaller varicose veins.

This procedure has been around since the 1930s and it involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein.

The solution, which is usually a saline/salt solution, is a vein irritant. It irritates the lining of the affected vein, causing it to collapse and stick together. In the long run, the treated vessel turns into scar tissue and eventually fades from view.

What you can expect during sclerotherapy according to Premier Vein Clinic’s dedicated Sclerotherapy Nurse, Angie:

“Sclerotherapy is a minor procedure that can be done within an hour. It doesn’t require anesthesia and downtime.

During the procedure, you’ll be asked to lie on your back with your legs slightly elevated. The area being treated will be cleaned with alcohol before the solution will be administered into the vein through a fine needle.

You may experience a mild stinging while the needle is inserted into the vein. If you’re experiencing more than just a mild sting, we encourage you to speak up as the solution may have leaked into the surrounding tissue

Once the needle is withdrawn, a compression pad will be placed on the injected site.

You’ll be able to get up and walk after your procedure (walking is highly encouraged).”

If you want to put an end to your ugly, uncomfortable spider and small varicose veins, give serious consideration to sclerotherapy treatments.
