Are Vein Treatments Covered by Insurance?

Are your varicose veins causing you pain and discomfort?
Are conservative measures not working to get rid of varicose veins?
If you answer YES to these questions, then your insurance plan may cover vein treatment.

Vein treatment is covered by insurance

Most insurance plans cover vein treatment if it’s medically necessary. Some insurance companies may require their patients to meet deductible pay or pay the copay before covering the treatment.

What does ‘medically necessary’ mean?

Some insurance companies require their clients to undergo six (6) weeks of conservative treatment before covering the interventional treatment. Examples of conservative treatment may include daily exercise, weight reduction, leg elevation, and compression stockings.

If patients still have symptoms (very little to no improvement at all) after doing the 6-week conservative treatment, then the interventional treatment is considered ‘medically necessary.’ Some symptoms that companies would look for include pain and edema that interferes with one’s daily living, inflammation, and clotting near the veins, and lower leg ulcers.

How about treatment for spider veins?

Although spider veins are often considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance, there are some patients with spider veins who have underlying signs of vein disease. If that is your case, your insurance may cover treatment for your spider veins.
