Veins are blood vessels that carry blood from the body tissues back to the heart. They have one-way valves to prevent back-flow, ensuring blood only flows in the direction of the heart. When these valves are damaged, the blood can back up and pool in the veins. This leads to the development of varicose and spider veins.

Varicose and spider veins are common venous disorders. They are not life-threatening but can be a great source of discomfort. Plus, with the way they look, they are often considered to be a cosmetic problem.

Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is typically used for the treatment of spider veins. It’s a medical procedure in which a sclerotherapy specialist injects a chemical called the sclerosant directly into the affected veins. The sclerosant causes damage to the inner lining of the vessel, leading to the formation of a clot that blocks the blood circulation in the vein and beyond.

Prior to the procedure, you will have an initial consultation with a vascular medicine expert to determine if you’re a good candidate for sclerotherapy.

Not all patients are good candidates for the procedure. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it will likely be recommended that you wait until you have given birth or done with breastfeeding before proceeding with sclerotherapy.
