What is a Vein Screening?

Venous conditions like varicose veins do not discriminate. They don’t care if you’re male or female, young or old, or with a family history of such condition or not.

You may have them without you noticing it. And it’s tricky, especially with varicose veins as they can cause a great deal of discomfort when they’re not managed.

Determining Your Risk

A vein screening is a form of vein assessment to determine your risk or the severity of existing venous condition. It’s a painless examination that help a vascular specialist determine your vein’s health.

A vein screening provides you an opportunity to know whether you’re at risk or have an existing venous condition. Such information can help you seek appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

Who should get screened?

There are several factors that can increase your risk of developing venous conditions. These include age (you are more prone to having varicose veins as you age), restricted mobility, family history, gender (varicose veins are more common in women than in men), smoking, and obesity. If you have any of these factors, then it would be best to see a vein specialist to get the vein screening.

You’re also a good candidate for vein screening if you’re noticing unusual signs and symptoms on your legs, including pain, swelling, and wounds that won’t heal. Have them checked even if you don’t have the known risk factors.

What can you expect during a vein screening?

The screening process consists of filling out a questionnaire, which asks you of your medications, medical history, and possible symptoms. A vascular physician or specialist will perform a physical assessment of your lower extremities to check for signs of varicose veins and venous insufficiency.  If venous disease is suspected, a separate ultrasound exam may be recommended to access your critical vein function and identify any vein blockages. An ultrasound exam is a more in-depth diagnostics tool and will normally be billed to your insurance company.
