Consequences of Waiting on Surgery to Treat Varicose Veins

Consequences-of-waiting-on-surgery-to-treat-varicose-veins-300x300Varicose veins are not normally a serious, life threatening issue, but when left untreated, you may be at risk for developing some serious vascular problems in the future. The presence of varicose veins does not mean you will experience a complication, but the longer you wait before seeking evaluation by a board-certified vascular surgeon the higher your risk in developing a more serious condition.

Severe complications from untreated varicose veins may include:

Venous Leg Ulcers: Increased pressure due to the buildup of blood in a diseased vein can lead to the accumulation of fluid in the surrounding tissue, also known as inflammation. This, combined with the pooling of the blood in the lower leg can result in the weakening of skin around the diseased vein. Over time this can make your skin vulnerable to cracking and forming wounds or ulcers. In leaving varicose veins untreated, you increase your risk in developing venous leg ulcers. Venous leg ulcers can be prone to infection and are often difficult to heal.

Blood Clots: Varicose veins are caused by increased pressure in the veins that weaken valves and disrupt blood flow.  As a result, blood may pool or even clot inside the vein. Blood clots may occur superficially near the surface of your skin or in a deep vein.   Blood clots in a deep vein increase your risk of serious health problems, including the possibility that a clot could break off and travel to your lung and block an artery there.  This is a dangerous condition known as a pulmonary embolism (PE).

Especially if your varicose veins are causing painful symptoms and swelling, you should consult with a board certified vascular surgeon and allow them to counsel you on any degree of treatment needed. Don’t wait until a health risk emerges before seeking medical attention. Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue.

Discuss any concerns you have related to your varicose or spider veins with your primary care physician or schedule a consult with a Premier Vein Clinics specialist today.
