Insurance and Vein Treatment

Varicose veins, although not life-threatening, can be a great cause of discomfort, affecting over 40 million people all over the globe. Varicose veins can cause pain, fatigue, and swelling of the legs and the ankles.

Untreated severe cases of varicose veins can lead to hyperpigmentation, venous leg ulcers, hardening of the skin in your lower legs, and small blood clots just under the skin.

Treating Varicose Veins

During the early stages of varicose veins, doctors may suggest non-invasive solutions such as lifestyle changes and the use of compression stockings. Lifestyle changes include regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, elevating the legs, and avoiding prolonged standing or sitting.

When lifestyle changes aren’t enough, physicians may recommend other forms of treatment. This treatment could be:

  • Endovenous Laser Therapy
Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) is a non-invasive treatment for larger veins. Laser energy delivered through a small puncture in the leg is used to treat the diseased vein. There is no surgery or hospitalization, and only a local anesthetic is applied. The procedure is performed in the office in about an hour.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation Therapy
Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure for varicose veins in which a vein specialist inserts a tiny catheter through a small incision below the knee. This procedure is performed in-office and is covered by most health insurance plans.
  • Ambulatory Phlebectomy
This is an outpatient procedure that involves a series of tiny skin punctures through which the diseased vein is removed with a small needle-like hook. It is usually recommended for medium to larger varicose veins. Local anesthetic is used during this in-office minimally invasive procedure. It is often used in conjunction with sclerotherapy. Little to no down time is required.

Insurance and Varicose Vein Treatment

One of the most popular concerns with treating varicose veins is whether or not the treatment would be covered by insurance.

The answer is yes!

Insurance companies usually cover treatments for varicose veins, especially if the patient has symptoms that affect their every-day life. Some of the varicose vein symptoms include burning sensation in the legs, aching and pain in the legs, throbbing sensation, and restless legs.
