Sclerotherapy Facts: Featuring Angie, Premier Vein Clinics’ Sclerotherapy RN Specialist

Summer is just around the corner! If you’re suffering from spider veins, you don’t have to be self-conscious of your legs anymore. Premier Vein Clinics of Knoxville offers an in-office procedure to help with the symptoms and appearance of spider veins.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is an in-office, minimally invasive procedure where a solution is injected into the vein wall. This then causes the treated vein to collapse, develop scar tissue, and eventually be absorbed into the body.

How do I know if Sclerotherapy is right for me?

Sclerotherapy is typically used for the treatment of spider veins. It is important to first be seen for a vein screening to decide if sclerotherapy is the best option for you. It is quite effective in elimination of most spider veins.

What should patients consider before undergoing sclerotherapy?

It is important for someone who is considering undergoing sclerotherapy to be educated about the procedure so they know what to expect beforehand. Patients must also be dedicated to doing the home care on their own that comes with it for the most successful results.

Patients should be prepared for the possibility of wearing compression stockings after treatment. Additionally, they should anticipate regular exercise, walking up to 30 minutes a day. Taking care of the legs after sclerotherapy is important for proper healing and recovery.

It is also important for patients to understand that sclerotherapy is not a quick fix. Spider veins don’t appear overnight and they are not going to disappear overnight. Diligent care post-treatment is necessary for the best results long term.

Tree Analogy

Our Premier Vein Clinics’ Sclerotherapy nurse, Angie Jacobs, uses an easy-to-understand analogy for her patients, comparing the sclerotherapy procedure to the anatomy of a tree.

“If you think of your legs as a tree, you have the large veins (trunk), the branches (ones you can see), and the leaves (spider veins). The trunk leads to branches, and these lead to the leaves. I take my vein light and look for branches coming off of the trunk. The larger branches are injected first, and then the smaller veins that are leftover are injected last.”

“If you inject the leaves without cutting off the branches, the leaves are going to come back. If you get it at the branch, closer to the trunk, that helps prevent the leaves (spider veins) from returning.”

If you have spider veins and are wondering if sclerotherapy might be a good option for you, Premier Vein Clinics of Knoxville is here to help. Schedule your FREE consultation online, or call 865-588-8229 today!
