Spider veins can be more than just cosmetic problems. A number of people seek treatment because they cause discomfort, not just because they look bad.

Sclerotherapy is a popular treatment option for spider veins. It’s a procedure that involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution, which is typically a salt solution, irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and stick together. Over time, the treated vein becomes scar tissue and fades from view.

What to expect during sclerotherapy according to our experts at Premier Surgical Vein Clinic in Knoxville:

Sclerotherapy is a minor procedure that can be done within an hour. It doesn’t require anesthesia and downtime.

During the procedure, you’ll be asked to lie on your back with your legs slightly elevated. The area being treated will be cleaned with alcohol before the vein specialist produces the solution into the vein with a fine needle.

The procedure itself is relatively painless (nope, it HURTS). However, some people experience minor stinging while the needle is inserted into the vein. If you’re experiencing more than just the mild sting, you should tell your sclerotherapy specialist as the solution may have leaked into the surrounding tissue.

Once the needle is withdrawn, a compression pad will be placed on the injected site.

You’ll be able to get up and walk after your procedure. Walking is highly encouraged.
