Compression Garments…just what are they?

compression garmentsIf you suffer from the symptoms of varicose veins and have consulted a physician, you have likely heard the term “compression garments”. On the Premier Vein Clinics blog, we mention compression garments or compression stockings frequently as a first line of defense to fight the symptoms or lessen your risk of painful venous disease. From skinny jeans, to yoga pants, to panty hose, what really qualifies as a compression garment and why? Read on to find out!

Compression garments are clothing in the form of socks, pantyhose or even a sleeve offering support to promote circulation. They are often recommended for people who are required to stand for long periods of time. The “compression” of the garments on the muscles helps to maintain a healthy level of pressure on the veins to keep blood flowing in the right direction and avoid pooling of blood. Compression garments are offered in a variety of degrees based upon your individual needs. If your board certified vascular surgeon decides you need a higher degree of compression, you will receive a prescription. These garments can be found over-the-counter at most drug stores or through your pharmacy for any prescription grade pieces.

There are many reasons a doctor may recommend medical compression garments. They can promote proper healing following a vein treatment or to reduce painful varicose vein symptoms such as swelling of the legs. Compression sportswear such as yoga pants or spandex are completely different from compression garments and are worn to prevent chafing and rashes, and help with muscle stiffness post-exercise. Likewise, shapewear such as SPANX are not medical compression garments and are solely intended to provide a more slim and shapely appearance.

If you are suffering from painful symptoms of varicose veins or have a job that requires prolonged standing, talk with your physician about how compression garments might benefit you. Your physician can help to determine the appropriate degree of compression needed to help you find relief and possibly lessen your risk of developing varicose veins. If you do wear compression garments for the purpose of promoting circulation, it is a good idea to spend a few moments with your feet elevated above your heart after removing them each day.

If you are not able to find relief from your varicose veins, schedule a consult with one of our board certified vascular surgeons. Premier Vein Clinics will work diligently with you to restore healthy, great-looking, pain-free legs. Request your FREE screening online or call (865) 588-8229.
